Cultural Crossroads 2022: The Making of the 1901 AL Constitution

Enjoy Landmarks’ annual Alabama History symposium, Cultural Crossroads on May 7th, 2022. The symposium begins with registration at 8:30am and runs until 3:00pm.

Historians from across Alabama will explore the world of Reconstruction Alabama and unravel the circumstances and environments that created the worlds longest constitution. They will also address the preceding constitutions written by Alabama’s Reconstruction Governments and the resurrection of Alabama’s planter class after the America Civil War, culminating in the 1901 Constitution. These events ushered sixty years of racial segregation in Alabama and laid the ground work for the Civil Rights Movement.
