history/now: Conversations on the Past + Present
May 23 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm UTC-5
free
Join us at the Archives for a new installment in our history/now series, “Reckoning with Shared Pasts,” presented by Ann Banks and Karen Orozco Gutierrez, moderated by WSFA-TV’s Valorie Lawson.
In 2018, Ann Banks’ and Karen Orozco Gutierrez’s lives crossed paths while they were researching their families’ past. Banks is a descendant of Albert James Pickett, a wealthy planter, enslaver, and Alabama’s first historian. Gutierrez is a descendant of Milton, a man enslaved by Pickett. After communicating online, the two women met in Montgomery to tackle their families’ shared history together. During this program, Banks and Gutierrez will discuss what they discovered about their families and each other as they confronted their shared connection through slavery.
A Q&A will follow the program. Admission is free.
